New medical system: Asian Hospital & Health Care Management: Medtronic Launches Discyphor Direct(TM) Catheter System

Second-Generation Product for Diagnosis of Discogenic Low Back Pain

Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT ), today announced the U.S. launch of the Discyphor Direct™ Catheter System, the second-generation catheter system used by physicians to obtain additional information to diagnose discogenic low back pain.

The Discyphor Direct Catheter System provides additional information to help identify which disc is causing a patient's pain. More than 100,000 patients annually undergo spinal surgery for discogenic low back pain in the United States1, but patient satisfaction from such surgeries is mixed.

"With the Discyphor Direct Catheter System, we are empowering physicians to independently assess discs to determine the source of a patient's back pain while delivering many enhancements over our first-generation product," said Robert White, president of Kyphon and Interspinous Process Decompression Devices for the Spinal and Biologics at Medtronic, which markets the Discyphor product line. "Both patients and physicians will benefit from this new system because of its improved ease of use and a needle that is designed with an atraumatic or blunt tip."

Article: Asian Hospital & Health Care Management: Evidence-Based Tuberculosis Diagnosis by Madhukar Pai*, Andrew Ramsay, Richard O'Brien

With the publication of several systematic reviews, there is now a strong evidence base to support global policy on TB diagnostics. A key challenge is to maintain the momentum gained in the past few years, and expand the scope and role of evidence synthesis to outcomes that go beyond conventional diagnostic accuracy. These outcomes include: accuracy of diagnostic algorithms (rather than single tests) and their relative contributions to the health care system; incremental or added value of new tests; impact of new tests on clinical decision-making and therapeutic choices; cost-effectiveness in routine programmatic settings; impact on patient-centered outcomes; and societal impact of new tools. Indeed, the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach to grading the quality of evidence and strength of recommendations for diagnostic tests recognizes that diagnostic accuracy results are surrogates for patient-centered outcomes, and emphasizes that diagnostic tests are of value only if they result in improved outcomes for patients.

DiaGenic Press Release: DiaGenic appoints SRL RANBAXY Pathology Laboratories for marketing DiaGenic's early Breast Cancer Test in India

Oslo – May 23, 2008 – DiaGenic ASA and SRL Ranbaxy Ltd. today announced that they have signed a commercial agreement to commence marketing DiaGenic's breast cancer test in India. This development follows rapidly from a presentation at The Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology Societies of India (FOGSI) annual meeting in New Delhi in February where the interim results of a large Indian clinical study on this test were presented.

DiaGenic has developed a patient friendly diagnostic test for early detection of breast cancer in which a woman merely has to give a small blood sample, which is then subjected to sophisticated laboratory analysis to detect changes in gene expression. The interim results from the Indian study showed that the gene set, previously identified in Scandinavian and US cohorts, also had similar good diagnostic and predictive performance in the Indian population. The test is not affected by ethnic variation or menopausal state of the patient, allowing for widespread use to diagnose breast cancer at an early stage.

Profile : life sciences company : Oslo : Norway : DiaGenic ASA

DiaGenic ASA is an innovative Norwegian life sciences company founded in 1998 and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

DiaGenic develops patient-friendly tests for the early diagnosis of devastating diseases where early intervention is crucial for successful treatment. DiaGenic's patented method is based on identifying disease-specific gene signatures from easily available sample material such as blood.

DiaGenic's strategy is to work with research and technology partners to develop a pipeline of assays for commercialisation by major diagnostics companies. Currently DiaGenic's first two tests for the early detection of breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease are on track to enter extensive clinical trials during 2007.

OnLine News : Rediff.com : Outsourcing diagnostics to India : Pathology labs' BPO biz woes

Indian pathology labs that hope to generate business from the United Kingdom may have to invest in a front-end operation there because of issues related to legal liability in the event of faulty analysis of samples.

A team of 13 chief executives of different hospitals under the UK's National Health System (NHS) visited India recently to study the healthcare delivery service. Some Indian pathology labs have worked towards using India's relative cost advantage to attract basic pathology lab business from the UK and the United States.

Indian pathology lab chains such as SRL Ranbaxy and Metropolis have had their main lab accredited to the College of American Pathologists to project the credibility needed for outsourcing opportunities.

The NHS has already outsourced pathology samples to India's SRL Ranbaxy and Metropolis Health Services as part of a pilot project. The NHS team, however, felt that any meaningful outsourcing of analysis of pathology samples to India was not going to be easy in the present situation.

International patients who are suffering from mastectomy and can't afford the high cost of the mastectomy surgery in their country are wishing to have their mastectomy in India due to its low cost. Surgery of breast cancer is called as mastectomy. The breast is composed of mainly fatty tissue. Within this tissue is a network of lobes, which are made up of tiny, tube-like structures called lobules that contain milk glands. Tiny ducts connect the glands, lobules, and lobes and carry the milk from the lobes to the nipple, located in the middle of the areola (darker area that surrounds the nipple of the breast). About 90% of all breast cancers originate in the ducts or lobes. Almost 75% of all breast cancers begin in the cells lining the milk ducts and are called ductal carcinomas. Indian hospitals are arousing the interest of the international patients for undergoing their mastectomy in India at some of the finest hospitals at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Goa by the best surgeons trained from all over the world.

Online News : India PR Wire : Time Medical Inc. introduces to the world their ground-breaking technologies that will change the economics of MRI industry

"MRI has become the preferred choice for medical diagnosis due to its non-invasive and non-radioactive nature. Compared with other imaging modalities such as CT and Ultrasound, MRI not only provides super physical and structural feature, but also functional chemical information of the human body. However, MRI is still too expensive for widespread clinical applications in developing countries including China and India. With rising trend in cancer and other deadly diseases, there is a dire need for high quality MRI imaging at affordable cost." says Prof Q.Y. Ma, leading Scientist in the MRI field and Co-Founder of Time Medical Inc. (TiMed).

For magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the higher the magnet field, the better the image quality. High-field MRI system market is dominated by multinational companies and these manufacturers have been trying to improve imaging resolution by increasing the magnetic field strength. The field strength for major clinical MRI systems has progressed from 0.3 Telsa (T) to 1.5T and continued to 3T (the highest field strength allowed for human imaging), with system price around US$0.5M, US$1.5M and US$3M respectively.

As part of its cost-cutting efforts, Britain may ship blood and urine samples from National Health Service (NHS) patients to India for clinical tests and in return get test results by e-mail.

Private sector hospitals are already conducting trials of the service, reducing the cost by one third and the company behind the scheme -- SRL Ranbaxy, Mumbai -- is now targeting the public sector and has already held discussions with concerned ministers.

The health department officials have met representatives of SRL Ranbaxy to hear how outsourcing to India could work. Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt also met the representatives of the firm earlier this month.

Harpal Singh, chairman of SRL Ranbaxy, said he held discussions with the department last September and several NHS facilities to "showcase our capabilities", although the NHS had not yet approached the firm to start formal trials. He also spoke to Hewitt earlier this month.

Article : Online : Healthcare Services Industry - India by Atul Bahl

The last decade has been witness to the giant strides taken by the Indian healthcare scenario, towards modernization and development- gone are the days when those who could afford it had to travel abroad to get highly specialized services such as cardiac surgery, while others had to do without it.

Today, patients from the developed Western nations are coming to India to receive specialized medical treatment. Not only is India meeting international standards, but at prices that compare very favorably with developed countries.

In India, healthcare is delivered through both the public healthcare system and the private sector. The public healthcare system consists of healthcare facilities run by the central and state governments, which provide services free of cost or at subsidized rates to low-income families in rural and urban areas. In the private sector, healthcare facilities are owned and run by for-profit companies and non-profit or charitable organizations.

Online News : Healthcare Industry to Boost the Indian Economy

/PRZOOM - Newswire/ - The rapid growth in the Indian healthcare sector is poised to be the future growth driver for the economy. India's health expenditure is among the highest for developing countries..

Delhi, New Delhi, India, 08/04/2006 – India's healthcare services industry is expected to be very appreciable in the near future. The Indian healthcare sector is anticipated to be the future growth driver for the economy. The Indian government expects that the healthcare industry, which is currently valued at $17 billion and comprises of hospital service, healthcare equipment, managed care and pharmaceuticals would grow at a rate of 13 percent annually.

The Indian healthcare industry overview indicates it has the same exponential growth potential as software and pharmaceutical industries in the country. Till now only 12% of the opportunities in Indian healthcare sector has been dug.

In terms of percentage of GDP, India's expenditure on health is among the highest of the developing countries. With the gaping difference in health costs between Indian and western countries, India is now the preferred destination quality health solutions. Other reasons account to the improved healthcare sector performance through growth in pharmaceutical market and health insurance market in the country.

Article : GLOBAL DIAGNOSTICS : China, Brazil, and India: Crashing the gates of the top ten IVD markets by Carl McEvoy and Michael Farmer

A look at the recent past, the present, and the near-term future of these emerging markets.

This year, the mature IVD markets, North America, Western Europe, and Japan, will represent seven of the top ten slots on the list of the world's most important IVD markets. These markets will spend about $22 billion on their suppliers of IVD products in 2008. But growth in these mature markets will remain modest, while margins will continue to be squeezed. Breaking into these markets is particularly difficult for new IVD companies, as they are the home turf of the major multinationals.

A very different story can be told about the countries that hold three spots on the roster of the top ten IVD markets: China, Brazil, and India. These three rapidly developing countries are now spending more than $2.5 billion per year on IVD products. With double-digit annual growth, this sum will likely double to $5.1 billion in 2015.

China, Brazil, and India are currently ranked sixth, ninth, and tenth, respectively, among IVD markets worldwide. By 2015, they will be ranked third, seventh, and ninth. For producers of IVD instrumentation, these three countries hold a disproportionate importance. There are 52,000 clinical labs in these three countries, only 16,000 of which are automated at present. This year, they will buy more than 8000 automated hematology systems, more than 4000 automated routine chemistry systems, and nearly 2500 automated immunoassay systems.

These three markets have some very interesting similarities and differences. This article compares China, Brazil, and India with regard to the following: market value and accessibility for overseas IVD companies, number and character of their clinical labs, competitiveness of indigenous producers, distribution challenges, and product registration challenges.

Focusing on China, Brazil, and India

In 2000, China, Brazil, and India added up to just $900 million in annual IVD spending, and most IVD companies operated in them opportunistically. But with seven years of growth in the 15-20% range, these three countries are of strategic importance to most IVD firms. China is the world's sixth-largest IVD market, generates annual revenues worth $1.5 billion, and is only a bit smaller than Italy and France. Brazil is ranked ninth in the world, and is slightly smaller than the United Kingdom at $750 million per year. India is the tenth-largest at $340 million per year.
